UX writer: the words inside apps and websites

The roleWhat does a UX writer do
A UX writer writes the words people see inside digital products: buttons, menus, error messages, onboarding screens, notifications and empty states. These small texts, called microcopy, help people understand what to do next.
A typical task: users of a banking app often abandon a transfer after an error. The UX writer rewrites the message from “Error 403” to a clear explanation with the next step, tests two versions with the design team and sees fewer support tickets.
Many companies now call this role content designer, because the job includes structure and flow, not only words. Some agencies use the title UX copywriter.
Large tech companies have whole teams. Startups often have one.

Getting startedHow to become a UX writer
No specific degree is required. Writers, journalists, translators and support specialists often move into the role.
A UX writing course teaches microcopy, voice and tone and how to work in Figma. A UX writer course with portfolio projects is especially useful. A UX writer certification from the UX Writing Hub or a similar school can help beginners stand out.
Your UX writer portfolio should show before-and-after examples with the reasoning behind each choice.
