UX researcher: finding out what users really need

The roleWhat does a UX researcher do
A UX researcher, or user researcher, studies how people use products and what they need. The findings help designers and product managers decide what to build and how to improve it.
A typical study: an online grocery app sees many people leave before paying. The researcher runs eight interviews and a usability test, finds that delivery fees appear too late, presents the evidence with video clips and suggests showing fees on the product page. The team ships the change and checkout completion rises.
UX research uses both qualitative methods, such as interviews and usability tests, and quantitative ones, such as surveys and analytics.

Getting startedHow to become a UX researcher
Many UX researchers have degrees in psychology, sociology, anthropology or human-computer interaction, but career changers are common too.
A UX research course teaches study planning, interviewing, testing and synthesis. For an entry level UX researcher role, show two or three research case studies with your plan, process and the impact of your findings. Keep your UX researcher resume focused on methods and outcomes.
