IT project manager: how the job works and how to become one

The roleWhat does a project manager do
A project manager makes sure a project is delivered on time, within budget and at the agreed quality. In IT that might be a new website, a system migration or the launch of a mobile app. This person plans the work, tracks progress, manages risks and keeps everyone informed.
A typical task: a retailer wants a new online store live before the holiday season. The IT project manager splits the work into phases, agrees on dates with the agency, the payment provider and the warehouse team, and holds a short weekly review where every delay gets an owner and a new date.
Titles vary. An IT project manager or technical project manager works closer to engineering, while larger companies use program manager for several related projects.

Getting startedHow to become a project manager
A degree helps but is not required. Many people move into project management from coordination, business analysis, QA or engineering roles.
A project management course teaches the basics: scope, schedule, budget, risks, Agile and Scrum. The best-known project manager certification is PMP from the Project Management Institute, which requires several years of experience. For beginners, CAPM or a Scrum certification is a good first step, and a short project manager course with practice cases helps prepare for both.
