Product manager: what the role is and how to get into it

The roleWhat does a product manager do
A product manager decides what a digital product should do next and why. The work starts with users and the business: what problem people have, what would make them pay or stay, and what the team can build in the coming months. The result is a roadmap and clear priorities for engineers and designers.
A typical task: users of a budgeting app drop off during sign-up. The PM looks at the funnel, talks to five users, finds that bank linking feels risky, and agrees with design and engineering on a simpler first step. Two weeks later, sign-ups grow by a measurable share.
Product management sits between business, design and engineering. Titles vary: technical product manager for roles close to APIs and infrastructure, digital product manager in companies moving services online.

Getting startedHow to become a product manager
There is no single degree for this job. Many people move into product management from engineering, design, analytics, marketing or customer success, because they already understand one side of the product.
A product management course gives the vocabulary and frameworks: discovery, prioritization, metrics, roadmaps. Some people also take a product manager certification such as those from Product School or Pragmatic Institute, but hiring managers care more about examples of products you improved.
A good first step inside a company is the associate product manager role, or taking ownership of one small feature in your current team.

No budget? Pick an app you use every day, write a one-page case: who uses it, one problem you see, how you would test a fix and which metric would prove it worked. Two or three such cases make a strong portfolio for interviews.

PayProduct manager salary in the US and abroad
Most people do not start in this role. They first spend a few years in engineering, design, analytics or another job, and then move over, so plan for that path before the product manager salary applies. According to a 2026 US salary guide, an entry-level product manager earns around $100,000 a year, the median is about $130,000, and senior product managers reach roughly $170,000 in base pay. At large tech companies, total pay with stock can be much higher.
