JavaScript developer: the language of the web

The roleWhat a JavaScript developer does
JavaScript runs in every web browser and, with Node.js, on servers too. A JavaScript developer, or JS developer, builds interactive web pages, single-page apps and back-end services with it.
A typical task: an online form loses users because of slow validation. The developer rewrites the form logic, validates fields as the user types, sends data asynchronously and shows clear errors. Completed forms grow noticeably.
Most developers specialize after the basics: front end with React, Vue or Angular, back end with Node.js, or full stack.
JavaScript developers work in almost every kind of company. Front-end roles focus on interfaces in the browser, back-end roles use Node.js for APIs and services, and full-stack roles combine both. There are also JavaScript jobs in mobile with React Native and desktop apps with Electron.
Day to daySkills and tools
| Skill | What it is used for every day |
|---|---|
| Modern syntax: ES6+ | Clean, readable code |
| DOM and browser APIs | Interactive pages |
| Async: promises, async/await | Working with servers |
| Frameworks: React, Vue, Angular | Building larger apps |
| Node.js | Server-side code |
| Testing: Jest, Playwright | Reliable code |
Getting startedHow to learn the language
No degree is required. Many developers are self-taught or come from bootcamps.
To learn JavaScript, start with the basics in the browser, then the DOM, async code and one framework. A JavaScript course with projects keeps you practicing; free resources such as MDN are excellent too.
Plan six to twelve months of regular practice before applying for junior roles.
Understanding how the language really works pays off: scope and closures, the event loop, promises, modules and how the browser renders pages. These topics come up in almost every JavaScript interview, even for framework-focused roles.

GrowthCareer path
Common path: junior, mid-level and senior developer, then lead or architect.
JS developer jobs and JavaScript developer jobs are among the most common in tech. Remote JavaScript developer jobs are widespread.
After a few years, most developers specialize in a framework, back end or performance and tooling. Senior JavaScript developers often lead front-end architecture, set code standards and mentor juniors. Contributing to open-source projects is also a strong way to show real experience to employers.
