Java developer: backend systems for banks, retail and big tech

The roleWhat a Java developer does
This language is one of the most widely used for backend systems. It runs on the JVM, is fast and stable, and powers banking platforms, online stores, insurance systems and many big tech services. A Java developer, or Java engineer, builds and maintains these services.
A typical task: a bank needs an API that checks card transactions for fraud in real time. The developer builds a Spring Boot service, connects it to Kafka for incoming events and a database for rules, writes tests and tunes it to answer in under 50 milliseconds.
Many developers also work with Kotlin, which runs on the same JVM.
Many of the systems that move money, book flights and manage supply chains run on Java. These codebases are often large and long-lived, so Java developers spend a lot of time reading, improving and extending existing code, not only writing new services from scratch.
Day to daySkills and tools
| Skill | What it is used for every day |
|---|---|
| Core language and OOP | Clean, maintainable code |
| Spring Boot | Building backend services |
| SQL and Hibernate | Working with databases |
| Kafka, REST APIs | Connecting systems |
| Testing: JUnit, Mockito | Reliable code |
| Docker, Kubernetes | Deployment |
Getting startedHow to learn the language
A degree helps in some enterprises but is not required everywhere.
To learn Java, start with the core language and OOP, then collections, streams and Spring Boot. A Java course with projects keeps you practicing. Prepare for Java developer interview questions on OOP, collections, concurrency and Spring.
After the basics, focus on how real Java services are built: dependency injection in Spring, REST controllers, validation, database access with JPA, configuration and logging. Then learn testing with JUnit and Mockito and run your service in Docker. These skills appear in most Java developer job descriptions.

GrowthCareer path
Common path: junior developer, mid-level, senior, then team lead, solution architect, engineering manager or CTO.
Java developer jobs are common in banks, insurance, retail and large tech. Junior Java developer jobs are often in large companies with training programs. Remote Java developer jobs are widespread.
Senior Java developers are expected to understand the JVM: memory, garbage collection and performance tuning. They also design services and APIs that other teams use. From there, many move to solution architect roles, where they choose technologies and design whole systems.

PayJava developer salary in the US and abroad
Plan for six to twelve months of learning and a job search before the first role. The BLS counts these roles among software developers: entry pay is around $79,850 to $103,050 and the median is $133,080. The Java developer salary in banks and big tech often reaches $169,000 and more for seniors.
UnfilteredWhat the work looks like day to day
A typical day: a stand-up, building a feature in a Spring Boot service, a code review and investigating a slow query.
Releases in enterprises are planned, with testing and approval steps.
Enterprise teams often follow structured processes: code reviews, automated tests, staging environments and release approvals. This can feel slower than startup work, but it keeps critical systems stable. Java developers who learn to work well within these processes and still improve them are highly valued.
