Front end developer: building what users see and click

The roleWhat a front end developer does
A front end developer, also called a frontend developer or front end engineer, builds the part of a website or app that people see and interact with: layouts, buttons, forms, animations and the logic behind them.
A typical task: a designer hands over a new pricing page in Figma. The developer builds it with semantic HTML, responsive CSS and a small React component for the plan switcher, checks it on phones and screen readers and ships it the same week.
Front end development covers HTML, CSS and JavaScript, plus frameworks such as React, Vue or Angular.
Front end developers work at startups, agencies, e-commerce companies and large tech firms. Some focus on marketing sites and landing pages, others on complex web applications, design systems or performance.

Getting startedHow to become a front end developer
No degree is required. Many people switch careers through bootcamps or self-study.
A front end development course usually covers HTML and CSS, then JavaScript, then one framework. Build a portfolio of three to five projects, including one with an API.
Prepare for frontend developer interview questions about CSS layout, JavaScript basics, framework concepts and a small live coding task.

GrowthCareer path
Common path: junior, mid-level and senior developer, then team lead, architect, UI engineer or full-stack.
Front end developer jobs and frontend developer jobs are posted by product companies, agencies and startups. Remote frontend developer jobs are common, and front end engineer jobs at large tech companies include system design.
Senior front end engineers design component libraries, set standards for accessibility and performance and mentor other developers, which leads to lead and architect roles. Some also move into UI engineering or full-stack work.
