Engineering manager: from developer to people leader

The roleWhat does an engineering manager do
An engineering manager leads a team of software engineers. The job is about people and delivery: hiring, one-on-ones, feedback, career growth, team health and making sure the team ships what it promised.
A typical situation: a strong developer feels stuck and starts looking for other jobs. In a one-on-one the manager learns that the person wants harder problems, and gives them ownership of a new service. Three months later the developer leads its launch and stays.
In many companies the manager still reviews designs and code, but writes much less code than before. The tech lead owns technical decisions, while the manager owns people and process.

Getting startedHow to become an engineering manager
There is no direct way into this role from outside engineering. Almost every engineering manager first worked several years as a developer and often as a tech lead.
Before the switch, practice the people side: mentor juniors, run interviews, lead a small project. An engineering manager course or a book on management gives structure, and many companies run internal programs for new managers.
Prepare for engineering manager interview questions about conflict, underperformance, hiring decisions and delivery problems, with real stories from your past.
