Embedded systems engineer: software inside devices

The roleWhat embedded systems are and what an embedded developer does
Embedded systems are small computers built into devices: cars, medical monitors, smart thermostats, drones, industrial controllers. An embedded developer, also called an embedded software engineer or embedded systems engineer, writes the firmware that runs on their microcontrollers.
A typical task: a battery-powered sensor lasts only two months. The engineer measures power use with a logic analyzer, puts the microcontroller to sleep between readings, batches radio transmissions and extends battery life to over a year.
The work sits close to hardware: reading datasheets, using oscilloscopes and debugging problems that are partly electrical and partly software.
Embedded systems are everywhere, so the work varies a lot by industry. Automotive teams follow strict safety standards such as ISO 26262, medical device makers must document every change for regulators, while consumer electronics companies move fast and care about cost and battery life.
Day to daySkills and tools
| Skill | What it is used for every day |
|---|---|
| C and C++ | The main languages for firmware |
| Microcontrollers: ARM Cortex-M, STM32 | The hardware you program |
| RTOS: FreeRTOS, Zephyr | Scheduling tasks in real time |
| Protocols: I2C, SPI, UART, CAN | Talking to sensors and other chips |
| Debugging: JTAG, oscilloscope | Finding low-level problems |
| Electronics basics | Reading schematics and datasheets |
Getting startedHow to learn embedded systems
Most employers prefer a degree in electrical, computer engineering or computer science.
To learn embedded systems, start with C, then an inexpensive board such as STM32 or Arduino, then protocols and an RTOS. An embedded systems course with hands-on labs is much more useful than theory alone.

Udemy list prices in US dollars. Udemy runs frequent discounts, so a course may cost less in your region.
No budget? Buy a low-cost development board, read sensor data over I2C, display it and log it with low power use. Document the project with photos and code.
GrowthCareer path
Common path: entry level embedded software engineer, embedded engineer, senior and lead or architect.
Embedded software engineer jobs and embedded systems engineer jobs are posted in automotive, aerospace, medical devices and consumer electronics. Remote embedded software engineer jobs exist but are less common because of lab work.
Senior embedded engineers design the software architecture of a device, choose microcontrollers together with hardware engineers and review safety-critical code. Some move into embedded Linux, security or technical leadership. Strong debugging skills stay valuable at every level.

PayEmbedded software engineer salary in the US and abroad
Plan for an engineering degree or long self-study plus hardware projects before the first job. The BLS counts embedded engineers among software developers: entry pay is around $79,850 to $103,050 and the median is $133,080. The embedded systems engineer salary and the embedded software engineer salary for senior specialists reach $169,000 and more.
UnfilteredWhat the work looks like day to day
A typical day: writing a driver, testing it on a board in the lab, measuring signals with a scope and reviewing code.
Before a hardware release, the team runs long tests and fixes last issues.
Career growth
From engineer to lead or architect.
Job satisfaction
High for people who like hardware and low-level code.
Stability
Devices keep getting smarter, so demand stays steady.
Work-life balance: fine, 7 out of 10
Regular hours most of the time, with pressure before hardware deadlines.
Often on-site because of lab equipment; some remote work. Stress is moderate.
