.NET developer: building apps with C# and Microsoft tools

The roleWhat a .NET developer does
.NET is Microsoft’s platform for building web apps, APIs, desktop software, cloud services and games. A .NET developer, also called a dotnet developer or C# developer, writes code in C# and uses frameworks such as ASP.NET Core and Blazor.
A typical task: a logistics company needs an API for tracking shipments. The developer builds it with ASP.NET Core and Entity Framework, deploys it to Azure, adds authentication and writes integration tests. The API handles thousands of requests per minute.
Modern versions run on Windows, Linux and macOS and are open source.
.NET developers work in banks, insurance companies, healthcare, logistics and government, as well as in software companies that sell business products. Many of these organizations already use Microsoft tools, so the platform fits naturally with their systems.
Day to daySkills and tools
| Skill | What it is used for every day |
|---|---|
| C# | The main language |
| ASP.NET Core | Web apps and APIs |
| Entity Framework, SQL | Databases |
| Blazor | Web front ends in C# |
| Azure | Cloud deployment |
| Testing: xUnit | Reliable code |
Getting startedHow to learn .NET
No degree is required, though many enterprise employers prefer one.
To learn .NET, start with C#, then ASP.NET Core and Entity Framework, then Azure basics. A .NET course with a real API project keeps the order clear.
After C# basics, focus on ASP.NET Core Web APIs, dependency injection, Entity Framework Core and authentication. Then learn how to deploy to Azure App Service or containers. These topics appear in most job descriptions for .NET roles.

GrowthCareer path
Common path: junior, mid-level and senior developer, then lead or architect.
.NET developer jobs, dotnet developer jobs and C# developer jobs are common in finance, healthcare, government and enterprise software. Remote .NET developer jobs are widespread.
Senior .NET developers often move into solution architecture or cloud roles on Azure. Microsoft certifications such as Azure Developer Associate can support that move.
