Backend developer: the logic and data behind every app

The roleWhat a backend developer does
A backend developer, also called a back end developer or backend engineer, builds the server side of applications: APIs, business logic, databases, authentication and integrations with other services. Users never see this code, but every click depends on it.
A typical task: a mobile app needs order history. The developer designs the database tables, builds a REST endpoint with pagination, adds caching for speed, writes tests and documents the API for the mobile team.
Backend development can use many languages: Java, Python, Node.js, Go, C#, PHP or Ruby.
Backend developers work in almost every type of company: banks, online stores, streaming services, SaaS products and startups. Some focus on business logic and APIs, others on data, integrations with payment or delivery providers, or high-load systems that serve millions of users.
Day to daySkills and tools
| Skill | What it is used for every day |
|---|---|
| A server language | Java, Python, Node.js, Go or C# |
| APIs: REST, GraphQL | Connecting front ends and services |
| Databases: SQL, NoSQL | Storing and querying data |
| Caching and queues | Speed and reliability |
| Security | Authentication and safe data |
| Cloud and Docker | Deployment |
Getting startedHow to become a backend developer
No degree is required, though many backend engineers have one.
A simple backend developer roadmap: one language, HTTP and REST, SQL, a framework, testing, Docker and cloud basics. Build two or three APIs with databases and authentication.
Choose one language and go deep instead of jumping between many. Learn how HTTP works, how to design clear APIs, how databases use indexes and transactions and how to handle errors and logging. These fundamentals transfer to any language later.

GrowthBackend developer roadmap and career path
Common path: junior, mid-level and senior developer, then lead or architect.
Backend developer jobs, back end developer jobs and backend engineer jobs are among the most common in tech, and many are remote.
Senior backend developers design services, think about scaling and failure, and review designs of others. From there, the path leads to architect, staff engineer or engineering manager roles.
What you buildWhat this work teaches you
You will learn to think about data, performance and security together.
The job also builds systems thinking that leads naturally to architecture.
You will also learn to design APIs that other teams enjoy using, with clear names, predictable errors and good documentation.
Pros
- Huge job market
- Good pay
- Remote-friendly
- Many languages to choose from
- Path to architecture
Cons
- Less visible work
- On-call in some teams
- Complex debugging
- Security responsibility
- Constant learning

PayBackend developer salary in the US and abroad
Plan for six to twelve months of learning and a job search. The BLS counts these roles among software developers: entry pay is around $79,850 to $103,050 and the median is $133,080. The backend developer salary and the back end developer salary for seniors reach $169,000 and more.
UnfilteredWhat the work looks like day to day
A typical day: building an endpoint, a code review, investigating a slow query and a short sync with the front-end team.
Incidents and releases bring the busiest moments.
On-call rotations are common in larger teams, so knowing how to read logs and metrics quickly is an important everyday skill.
Career growth
From junior to architect or lead.
Job satisfaction
High for people who like logic and systems.
Stability
Every app needs a back end.
Work-life balance: good, 8 out of 10
Regular hours in most companies, with on-call in some teams.
Remote work is very common. Stress is moderate.
