AI engineer: building products with large language models

The roleWhat does an AI engineer do
An AI engineer, or artificial intelligence engineer, builds product features on top of AI models, most often large language models (LLMs). The job is less about training models from scratch and more about making them useful, safe and reliable inside real products.
A typical task: a support team wants an assistant that answers customer questions from the company’s help center. The AI engineer builds a RAG system that finds the right articles, sends them to an LLM with a carefully designed prompt, measures answer quality on a test set and adds guardrails against made-up answers.
A close role is the prompt engineer, who focuses on writing and testing prompts. In most companies today, prompt engineering is part of the AI engineer’s job rather than a separate title.
Day to daySkills and tools
| Skill | What it is used for every day |
|---|---|
| Python | Glue code, APIs and data processing |
| LLM APIs | Working with commercial and open models |
| RAG and vector databases | Grounding answers in company data |
| Prompt design and evaluation | Getting reliable, measurable output |
| LangChain, LangGraph | Building agents and workflows |
| Cloud and deployment | Serving AI features at scale |
Getting startedHow to become an AI engineer
Most AI engineers come from software engineering or data science. Strong Python and API skills matter more than a specific degree.
A practical order: Python, LLM APIs, prompt design, RAG with a vector database, evaluation and finally agents. An AI engineer course with projects helps you keep up, and an AI engineer certification from a cloud provider can support your resume.

GrowthCareer path
Many start as software engineers who add AI features to products. With experience, they lead AI projects, and senior engineers design AI platforms for the company.
Later steps are AI architect, head of AI or a move into ML research.
AI engineer jobs and artificial intelligence engineer jobs are growing fast across startups and large companies. Prompt engineer jobs exist too, but many have merged into broader AI roles.
What you buildWhat this work teaches you
You will learn to work with systems that are not fully predictable and to measure them carefully.
The job also teaches fast learning, because tools and models change every few months.

PayAI engineer salary in the US and abroad
Most AI engineers first work as developers, so plan for that path. The BLS counts this role among software developers: entry pay is around $79,850 to $103,050 a year and the median is $133,080. The AI engineer salary and the artificial intelligence engineer salary are often above that median, and prompt engineer salary offers vary widely by company.
UnfilteredWhat the work looks like day to day
A typical day: checking evaluation results, improving prompts or retrieval, a sync with the product team and reading about a new model release.
Launches are intense: the team tests edge cases, adds guardrails and watches real user conversations after release.
Career growth
From engineer to AI architect or head of AI.
Job satisfaction
High for people who enjoy new technology and fast change.
Stability
Strong demand today, with a field that keeps evolving.
Work-life balance: fine, 7 out of 10
Regular hours in most teams, with intense weeks around launches.
Remote work is common. Stress is moderate, plus the pressure of a field that changes every month.
